ATK Mohun Bagan gained a foothold in the AFC Cup quarter-finals on Saturday as they finished top of Group D in a 3-1 win over Majia S&RC in Male, Maldives. ATK Mohun Bagan now have six points from two matches and have overtaken Bashundhara Kings. He has four points from two matches. Liston Colaco, Roy Krishna and Manveer Singh scored a goal each to give ATK Mohun Bagan a decent win.
Earlier in the day, Bengaluru FC crashed out of the AFC Cup after a goalless draw with Basundhara Kings. Bengaluru FC lost 2-0 to ATK Mohun Bagan in their group opener and had just one point in their two matches after the loss on Saturday.
ATK Mohun Bagan scored the first goal of the game but it was considered offside. In the 25th minute, Maziya dealt a blow to ATK Mohun Bagan as he executed a classic counter attack and Aisam Ibrahim found the back of the net to give the home team the lead.
Majia took the lead of the break but the second half was entirely ATKMB’s. Antonio Habas’s half time talk worked and Ashutosh Mehta replaced Sumit Rathi in the 46th minute.
Ashutosh played a key role in bringing ATKMB back to level two minutes after his arrival. It was Ashutosh’s whipped cross to Liston Colaco which was led by the former Hyderabad FC man.
In the 63rd minute, Habas made two changes, with Hugo Baumus replacing SK Sahil and David Williams coming in for Deepak Tangri.
New legs and a change in strategy meant that ATKMB kept Maziya on his toes and surprised him with his movement. Liston was dropped on goal in the 64th minute but his shot was blocked by the keeper’s foot. However, it fell for Krishna, who gave it a sweet ending to give ATKMB the lead.
Manveer then got a perfectly weighted pass from Baumus and hit it into the goal to ensure a win for ATKMB.
On the last day of the group matches on August 24, ATK Mohun Bagan will take on Basundhara Kings and will need to draw or win to reach the quarterfinals.
