Supreme Court lawyer Sai Deepak termed the Supreme Court’s remarks on former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma blaming her for the murder of Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur as “crime, redundancy and overshooting”, the Supreme Court said. The Supreme Court bench was hearing Sharma’s plea seeking transfer of all cases against him in different states to Delhi as his “frequent threats to his life are in danger”.
Sharma said that he is constantly receiving death threats from different states.

Referring to his apology and withdrawal of remarks on the Prophet, the apex court bench said it was too late in the day. “On her complaint a person was arrested, but in spite of Multiple FIRsHe is yet to be touched by the Delhi Police,” the court said.
“This is a textbook example of blaming and shaming the victim. She was denied legitimate relief by multiple lawsuits. Refusing to transfer to a single jurisdiction exposes her to illegal harassment. This is problematic. Consequences petition.” The comments are pre-deciding on an issue on merits and should not have been done. A single comment will have a chilling effect on freedom of expression,” Deepak said.
He said since it was not placed on record, there was no question of expulsion, but when Sharma’s cases come up for hearing, he could influence the lower courts.
“There is zero nexus between the comments and the relief sought. It was not for the SC to decide… the comments were beyond powers…” said Deepak.
