In May 2020, an elephant died in Malappuram, Kerala after alleged persons were fed a pineapple stuffed with firecrackers. The elephant was in a lot of pain due to the firecrackers entering its mouth. She stood in the river for several days, after which she died. After her death, forest department officials conducted an autopsy and it was revealed that Jumbo was pregnant.

According to a media report, Mannarkad DFO MK Surjeet is hopeful that Riyazuddin will give details of the case and identify the person who gave the elephant by putting firecrackers in the pineapple. Riazuddin has been sent to judicial custody till October 30. The police have registered a case against the accused for illegally possessing and misusing explosives. On the other hand, the case of the forest department is the cause of death of the elephant, a wild animal that was protected under the Wildlife Protection Act.
