A major accident took place during the Rath Yatra of a temple in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. Eleven people have died after their chariot came under electric wire in the early hours of Wednesday. Two children are also among the dead. 15 people have been injured in the accident, who have been admitted to the hospital.
Expressing grief over the incident, state CM MK Stalin has announced an assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of the deceased. He will reach Thanjavur this afternoon, where he will take stock of the situation and meet the injured. State government minister Senthil Balaji told the assembly that a committee has been formed to investigate the accident. The committee will be headed by Revenue Secretary Kumar Jayant.

President expressed condolences
President Ram Nath Kovind has condoled the incident and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. At the same time, the Prime Minister has announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh each from the PM National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the families of the devotees who lost their lives in the accident. 50 thousand will be given to the injured.
Expressing grief over the incident, a two-minute silence was observed in the Tamil Nadu Assembly over the incident and tributes were paid to the deceased.
People started gathering since Tuesday night
The chariot caught fire after it came in contact with the high voltage line in the early hours of Wednesday.
The 94th Upper Gurupuja festival is being celebrated at Kalimedu Temple in Thanjavur. Crowds of people had started gathering since Tuesday night to participate in it. The Rath Yatra was passing through a turning point, during which the people standing on the chariot came in the grip of a high voltage wire.
The 9 feet high chariot was decorated with flowers and lights. A generator was also connected to power the lights of the chariot. The generator operator is also among the injured.
This time the power supply was not turned off
Due to the decoration items on the chariot, its height increased and it was struck by lightning.
Tiruchirappalli Central Zone IGP, V Balakrishnan said that an FIR has been registered and investigation is on. A police official said that to avoid any incident, the power supply on the way to the temple is usually switched off.
This time the height of the chariot was not enough to touch the high voltage line, so this time the power supply was not switched off. However, due to the equipment on the chariot, its height increased and the accident happened.
