India is now the top ranked team in the world in both ODI and T20I

India continue their impressive start to 2023 with another impressive series win at home. On Tuesday, the Rohit Sharma-led side moved to the top of the ODI rankings after a 3-0 clean sweep of New Zealand – a team that started the series on top.

The series saw Shubman Gill score a memorable ODI double century – the youngest male player to do so – and Rohit also ended his three-year wait for an ODI century. Then came some brilliant performances with the ball from Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur, while Hardik Pandya also contributed in the departments.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah praised the Indian cricket team’s performance so far in January, calling it an ‘absolute firecracker to start 2023’.

Shah posted, “From whitewashing Sri Lanka in ODIs earlier this month to a similar clean sweep of the #BlackCaps, it’s been an absolute firecracker to start 2023. #TeamIndia named No.1 ICC Men’s ODI team Congratulations on making it!” on his official Instagram account.

“I thought in the last six games we have played, we have done most of the parts right and that is important in a 50-over game. We were consistent as well,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation.

“To be honest, we don’t talk much about rankings. We mainly discuss about doing the right things on the field.”

While Rohit will rest for a few days before making his return in the four-Test series against Australia next month, the India T20I stars will take on New Zealand in a three-match series starting on Friday.

“Australia are a quality team and things won’t be easy for us, but I’m pretty sure we’ll be up for it,” Rohit said of the all-important series. ICC World Test Championship Cycle.
