AB de Villiers’ reaction on Virat Kohli’s captaincy: ‘You rise the bar, Virat’

India captain Virat Kohli left Test captaincy at a low level, especially after his team lost in South Africa. Kohli and his team were the favorites to lift the trophy, but instead lost the last two Test matches by a margin of seven each. With this, Kohli also became the only Indian captain to lose twice in South Africa, yet, by numbers, Kohli will continue to be one of the finest Test captains ever. He took over from MS Dhoni in 2014, when India were ranked seventh, but Kohli led the same team to the number one spot.

He led India in 68 Test matches – 40 wins, 17 losses and 11 match draws – with a win percentage of 58.82, registering memorable victories in foreign and home conditions. Apart from his initiative of producing four fast bowlers, he also helped India in SENA countries. Meanwhile, he was also given the captaincy of RCB where his performance was below normal. He managed to take his team to the final just once and like an ICC title, an IPL title kept him away. Nonetheless, this does not diminish his legend with the red jersey. His brotherhood with AB de Villiers helped RCB flourish in the IPL. So, when Kohli stepped down, AB was the first to react to the news and this is what he said.

“@imVkohli Well done, Virat! You definitely raised the bar,” he wrote.

India captain Virat Kohli’s sudden decision to step down as Test captain ‘surprised’ his childhood coach. Speaking to India News, Rajkumar Sharma said that like anyone else, he was shocked by Kohli’s decision. He said he would not like to make it too much as it is a “personal decision” of his ward, but added that it is a well thought out decision. “It’s a surprising decision. I wouldn’t like to comment too much on it because it’s his personal decision and I don’t want to say what made him step down. I won’t be much more on this until I know the real picture.” Won’t be able to comment on what he has done. I can say that he has not taken this decision in haste.”
