AB de Villiers Likely to Make Commentary Debut During Inaugural SA20

Former South African skipper AB de Villiers is looking forward to making his commentary debut during the inaugural SA20, starting January 10.

Known as ‘Mr 360’ during his playing days, de Villiers would bring all the brilliance and innovation to the commentary booth.

“I am a cricket fan at heart and I can’t wait to be behind the mic to watch the world’s best cricketers in action during the SA20. “I look forward to joining some of my old teammates and legends of cricket for this exciting occasion,” de Villiers said in an official statement.

The SA20 commentary team has reunited the great Proteas slip cordon with de Villiers joined by his former national teammates Mark Boucher, Ashwell Prince, Shaun Pollock, Herschelle Gibbs, Chris Morris and Vernon Philander.

Veteran commentator Mark Nicholls will be handling it all, with former England internationals Kevin Pietersen and Darren Gough joining the team. Pietersen, who was born in South Africa, is looking forward to returning home for the inaugural event.

“I am excited to be a part of the SuperSport team for the SA20 League. Especially as someone who was born in KZN and played cricket in Durban during the early part of my career. I am very proud to be a part of the inaugural SA20 league and love the country. I look forward to contributing to this program with a truly special team.”

Another international flavor added to the line-up with two-time former West Indies T20I world Cup-winning captain Daren Sammy was joined by South Africa’s first lady of cricket Kas Naidoo, former Pakistan captain Urooj Mumtaz, former Zimbabwe player Pammi Mbangwa, Mike Hessman and Zainab Abbas.

SA20 will compete directly with UAE’s ILT20, which is scheduled to start from January next year. Both the leagues will operate at a time when Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) is running.

The SA20 will be the third time that South Africa will attempt to launch a franchise T20 league in the country. In their previous attempts, an attempt to start a Global League T20 failed in 2017.

Its replacement, the Mzansi Super League, was held in 2018 and 2019, but did not receive major broadcast rights, with the free-to-air South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) receiving a small amount of broadcast rights. The league has not been played since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will now make way for the SA20.

All 33 matches will be broadcast live on SuperSport in Sub-Saharan Africa, Viacom18 India and the sky game in the UK. All six teams, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, Pretoria Capitals, Paarl Royals, MI Cape Town, Johannesburg Super Kings and Durban Super Giants, are owned by companies with IPL franchises.

MI Cape Town and neighbors Paarl Royals kickstart the tournament at Newlands, followed by Durban Super Giants hosting Joburg Super Kings at Kingsmead on January 11, before Pretoria Capitals face Sunrisers Eastern Cape at St George’s Park on January 12 Will travel to Gekebera to do. ,
