Aashram 3 Review: Bobby Deol’s Baba Nirala Loses Charm In Journey of Becoming ‘Bhagwaan’

Produced and directed by Prakash Jha, the series stars Bobby Deol, Aditi Pohankar, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Darshan Kumar and Tridha Choudhary. The ashram revolves around a preacher named Baba Nirala (played by Bobby Deol) and how he betrays his followers until a girl decides to fight against his wrongdoings.

If you have watched the first two seasons of Ashram, then you are definitely very excited for the third season of the show. However, you will be disappointed to know that Ashram 3 may let you down.

Ashram 3 revolves around Pammi Pehalwan, who saves his life from Baba Nirala, fights against him and reveals how he is a sex offender in the name of a self-proclaimed god. However, in 9 out of 10 episodes of about 40 minutes, there was no major development in the plot. It presented how Baba Nirala and his entire system were chasing Pammi, who was hiding from him to save her life.

The story gets interesting only amidst its sub-plots. For example, Komal’s story will keep you glued to the screen. Tridha Choudhary’s decision to have a ‘partnership’ in the ministry also adds some excitement. Another noticeable aspect is when Baba Nirala’s wife talks about her past in the previous episode. These matters will make you drowsy in personality. However, all these are short-lived.

When Pammi Pehelwan and Baba Nirala’s fight reaches the courtroom, you can imagine that things will get interesting. However, Ashram 3 leaves you with one of the worst court dramas ever. The two actors playing lawyers lack the energy that a courtroom drama usually demands. The dialogues are weak and the plot is rushed.

Talking about the cast, Bobby Deol has definitely lost his charm as Baba Nirala in Ashram 3. The first two seasons of the show presented him as powerful and cunning but the third season did not show any surprising side of his character. He is given less screen time in the initial episodes. Sometimes he is portrayed as a man going mad at Pammi’s memory, other times he is trying to maintain his power. It is not Deol’s fault as an actor but the writer who has not paid enough attention to Baba Nirala this time. Overall, in the journey from ‘Baba’ to ‘Bhagwan’, the character of Bobby Deol, who was the USP of the show, has been lost somewhere.

Ashram 3 introduces Esha Gupta as someone who is helping Baba Nirala in her ‘image building’ (there is a twist!) She is presented as someone who is shrewd, smart , and knows how to make things best for him. Her mind games and evil plot in the show will surely impress you. Talking about Darshan Kumar and Tridha Chaudhary, this time their characters have not been given much attention. While Darshan only serves as a support to Pammi Pehelwan, Tridha does almost nothing.

However, it should also be noted that the show ends with a bang as it gives you the promo of Ashram season four which will surely leave you thrilled.

As far as the current season is concerned, it only looks stretched and could have easily been shortened, which is what season four is planning to bring. It’s not boring, but brings very little development to its plot.
