Aap Ki Adalat: Welcoming the move to draft a Uniform Civil Code, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ending the practice of ‘triple talaq’ among Muslims.
Responding to Rajat Sharma’s questions on India TV’s show ‘Aap Ki Adalat’ to be aired tonight at 10 pm, Khan said, “Triple talaq has been abolished for the last four years. We are not going to analyze its consequences today. Can do. Let 40 years pass.” After 40 years our new generations will look up to our Prime Minister for taking the historic step to remove the 1000 years old practice. The life of women had become terrible due to triple talaq. On an average, there were 500 cases of triple talaq every month and the lives of the children of those women went into a dark phase. Those broken families will be analyzed after 40 years, and then people will say, it was a great reformist step. I do not like the word ‘Kranti’ (revolution). I would call it ‘Sankranti’ (change). Leave it to people to analyze after 40 years.
Arif Mohammad Khan said, “Triple talaq was abolished by law in 2019. Triple talaq cases have come down by 95 per cent in the last four years. Who benefited the most? Muslim women who used to be on the street.” After divorce. Furthermore, their offspring faced a bleak future. They would have benefited, and yet it was alleged that it would cause hardship to the Muslims.”
When Rajat Sharma pointed out, a Maulana had claimed that the practice of ‘Halala’ is meant to give respect to women who never dare to opt for divorce, Khan replied: “Well, he should be punished for this remark.” and they have crossed the limit. … The Holy Qur’an says, whenever a man or a woman opts for divorce, they are admonished not to do so, and then each party to arbitration two persons are called upon, and failing this, divorce is permitted on the condition that both remain together for three months. This provision in the Qur’an is so that if the mind of the man or the woman is different If so, the divorce will be invalid and they can remarry. But why are these leaders referring to the provision in the Quran as ‘instant divorce’?”
