A new twist between Punjab and Haryana with the third contender on the Capital Row – Chandigarh

Apart from Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh is now the third contender in this battle for whose capital it is. And this time, it is Chandigarh itself.

After Punjab and Haryana claimed the union territory through special assembly sessions, it is now the turn of the Chandigarh civic body to retain the union territory status and a special house to pass a resolution to retain its assembly. call a meeting. For this, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has called a special house meeting on April 7.

Chandigarh Mayor Sarabjit Kaur Dhillon confirmed the news and told News18, “We have asked all the 35 councilors of the civic body to seek opinion from their respective wards and a special house meeting has been called on 7th April, where a The offer will be brought. Express the sentiments that Chandigarh should continue to be a Union Territory with a Legislative Assembly.

Echoing Dhillon’s sentiments, Chandigarh BJP President Arun Sood said, “We support the special House meeting, in which a resolution is expected to be passed. We would also like to thank Home Minister Amit Shah for including the employees of Chandigarh under the Central Service Rules and for the projects worth Rs 600 crores initiated in the city.

Former city mayor Sood said that both the states had called special sessions with their claim on Chandigarh, but the residents of the UT were not being heard in any way.

“We want Chandigarh to continue as a union territory. It should also have its own assembly.”

Punjab and Haryana are suddenly locked in a fight over Chandigarh. The Haryana government, too, passed a unanimous resolution on Tuesday, seeing with concern the recent resolution passed by the Punjab Assembly claiming the UT.

Like in Punjab, in Haryana also the ruling and opposition parties have come together to support the resolution. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has expressed concern over the sudden move of the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government to lay claim to the joint capital. He has also said that Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann should have taken all the parties into confidence before moving such a proposal.

This is not the first time that Punjab has staked claim on Chandigarh. Such resolutions have been passed at least seven times in the past, mostly by Akali Dal-led governments. But, a recent move by the Home Ministry to announce Central Service Rules for the employees of the Union Territory has once again fueled Punjab’s displeasure over its dwindling share in the UT administration.

Mann immediately moved to pass a resolution, urging the Center to shift Chandigarh to Punjab, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah announcing that the Central Service Rules would be applicable to UT employees. Earlier, UT employees were governed by the service rules of Punjab. Shah’s announcement sparked a political controversy when he said the changes in service rules would benefit the UT administration’s staff in a “massive way”.
