A new department will be formed in Assam to protect indigenous faith and culture: CM Sarma

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said here that the Assam cabinet on Saturday decided to create a new department to protect the culture and practices of people belonging to tribal and other indigenous communities. He said that the new department will ensure that the native population of the state gets the necessary support along with preserving their faith and traditions.

Addressing a press conference, Sarma also said that the cabinet had agreed during the meeting that financial and administrative reforms were necessary to remove red tape and ensure speedy implementation of the schemes. The CM further informed that departmental heads would be entitled to give their approval for projects worth Rs 2 crore and below, and a finance committee headed by the chief secretary would be between Rs 2 crore and Rs 5 crore.

He said a special standing finance chaired by the finance minister would approve projects that cost between Rs 5 crore and Rs 100 crore, and only allow the cabinet to pursue schemes that have more than Rs 100 crore. amount is included.

Meanwhile, Sarma also allotted additional portfolios to two cabinet ministers, BJP’s Ranoj Pegu and UPPL’s ​​Urkhao Gavra Brahma, a notification said. Brahma, who holds the handloom and textile and soil conservation departments, will also be in-charge of the Bodoland department’s welfare.

Apart from the Education (Higher, Secondary and Elementary) Department, Pegu Saada will also take care of the welfare of the Tribes and Backward Classes Department. In Sarma’s 13-member cabinet, BJP has 10, AGP two and UPPL one minister.

The alliance won 75 seats in the 126-member assembly.
