A holiday was declared for schools and colleges in Chennai on Monday following incessant rains and water-logging in many parts of the district. Chennai District Collector Dr Vijayrani issued the order.

In T. Nagar, heavy rains have led to waterlogging and inundating several houses, making it impossible to live on the lower floors and most have shifted to the upper floors. However many houses with only one floor are not in habitable condition and many have been shifted to hotels and some to the homes of close relatives.

With many roads and subways closed, the city of Chennai is grappling with traffic congestion and vehicles have to be diverted.

Chief Minister MK Stalin visited the rain-affected areas of Ganapathy Nagar in Tirumulaivoyal and distributed relief materials to the people. He also visited several other rain-affected areas of the city.

In Chennai, around 700 people were shifted to relief camps and 392 roads in 108 localities of the city were inundated.

Speaking to IANS, Selvaraj, a resident of Ganpati Nagar, said: “It is a frequent occurrence and has not developed into a good morning. The issue of water-logging should be dealt with on a war footing and till the government resolves it.” Doesn’t work properly, things will make it difficult for people to live here. I have to go through water daily and it is causing itching in my feet.”
