In an effort to educate beggars, vagabonds and homeless children frequently found roaming around the railway station premises, Dr Kumar Ashish, the Superintendent of Police (Railway) in Muzaffarpur, has started an initiative known as ‘Rail Pathshala’.
The scheme aims to provide free education to these underprivileged children and divert them away from a life filled with uncertainty and criminal activities.
Dr Ashish said that the primary objective of this initiative is to provide education and instill moral values, nurturing these young minds to become responsible and law-abiding citizens.
“These children will later be enrolled in mainstream schools to deter them from the path of crime and prevent them from becoming conduits for unlawful activities,” he said.

These impoverished children, ensnared by poverty, often face barriers to accessing formal education, never having the opportunity to attend school, and resorting to odd jobs just to make ends meet. The initiative offers a glimmer of hope by extending free education to those children who traverse the various platforms of the railway station.
Outlining the program, Kumar Ashish said that after receiving continuous elementary education for several days, arrangements will be made for their formal admission into nearby government schools. Additionally, the Railway Police School will remain operational after regular school hours to facilitate the seamless integration of these children with their peers, he said.
The initial phase of this initiative involves the identification of children who roam the station premises, some of whom may have minor criminal records, he said, adding that subsequently, they are brought to a centre to receive preliminary and basic education, followed by assistance in securing regular admission into schools.
Dr Ashish reiterated that this initiative will pave the way for these children to evolve into exemplary citizens in the future. He also commended the dedication of female constables, personnel, and officers from various ranks who have assumed the role of teachers in carrying out this noble mission.
