A few days after winning the Chandigarh civic polls, the city councilor of the Congress joined the BJP.

Days after winning the municipal elections in Chandigarh, Congress leader Harpreet Kaur Babla on Sunday joined the BJP. Along with Harpreet her husband and senior Congress leader Devinder Singh Babla also joined the BJP.

Harpreet and Devinder Babla were inducted into the BJP at the party’s Chandigarh office in the presence of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher, Chandigarh BJP president Arun Sood and former Chandigarh BJP president Sanjay Tandon.

Harpreet Kaur Babla won the municipal election from Ward No 10 on Congress ticket. Sources say that Devinder Singh Babla was offered by the BJP that his wife would be given the post of mayor if he got his wife and some other Congress councilors to join the saffron party.

recently held Chandigarh Municipal Corporation ElectionAam Aadmi Party got 14 seats, while BJP got 12 seats. The Congress had got eight seats while one councilor belonged to the Shiromani Akali Dal.

A party needs to win 19 wards to get its councilor elected as mayor in the 35-ward Chandigarh Municipality.

Besides the 35 councillors, the Chandigarh MP, who is an ex-officio member of the municipal corporation, has voting rights. BJP’s Kirron Kher is the sitting MP from Chandigarh.
