A day after the election results, the Goa cabinet decided to recommend the dissolution of the assembly on March 14.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, whose party BJP won 20 out of 40 seats in the state assembly elections, held a meeting of his cabinet on Friday, during which it was decided to recommend the dissolution of the House on March 14. State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said this to reporters after the cabinet meeting.

“We met to thank the people for the resounding victory of the party. During the meeting, a resolution was moved to thank the people of the state.” Rane said, “The meeting chaired by CM Sawant on Monday decided to recommend the dissolution of the house to the state governor. The term of the current assembly is scheduled to end on March 15.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, State Revenue Minister Jennifer Monserrate said the cabinet would also be dissolved on Monday. Overcoming the anti-incumbency wave, the BJP emerged as the single largest party in the coastal state on Thursday with a victory in 20 assembly seats, less than half that, and quickly emerged as the regional outfit Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and three Got the support of independents. The MLAs will form the government for the third time in a row.

The party is yet to stake claim to form the government. Its central observers are expected to reach Goa on Friday, after which the new legislature party will meet to decide on its leader.

BJP’s Goa election in-charge Devendra Fadnavis had told reporters last evening that the party’s parliamentary committee would decide on the leadership of the new cabinet and the timing of the swearing-in.
