A day after the Center fixed the cap, the Delhi cabinet approved a hike of Rs 30,000 per month in the salaries of MLAs

The Delhi Cabinet on Tuesday approved hike in the salaries of MLAs as per the Centre’s proposal, raising the salary from Rs 12,000 per month to Rs 30,000, a day after the Center along with other state legislatures plans to hike the salaries of MLAs. rejected.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led cabinet approved the Centre’s proposed salary for MLAs, even as the government said Delhi MLAs will continue to be among the lowest-paid MLAs across India.

Salaries of Delhi MLAs have not increased for 10 years. The Kejriwal government had requested the Home Ministry that their salary and allowances should be at par with the MLAs of other states.

Sources said that the BJP and Congress-ruled states are currently paying 1.5-2 times more salary and allowances to the MLAs. Many states provide many other allowances and allowances like House Rent, Office Rent, Staff and Vehicle Allowance to their MLAs which the Delhi government does not.

In December 2015, the AAP government had passed a bill in the Delhi Assembly that capped the salary of MLAs to Rs 2.10 lakh per month. However, the Bill turned out to be null and void as prior permission was not taken from the authorities concerned before it was introduced in the Assembly, he said, adding, “The Center has restricted the increase in the salary of MLAs to Rs 30,000 in Delhi; Delhi MLAs will continue to be among the lowest paid MLAs in India,” claimed a government source.

At present, a Delhi MLA gets Rs 53,000 a month. This includes Rs 12,000 as salary, and the rest are allowances. In addition, they get Rs 30,000 per month to pay two staff members, whom they can hire, the sources said. “He may get Rs 60,000 as revised pay of Rs 30,000 and allowances, which together amount to Rs 90,000 per month,” the source said.

The revised pay and allowances details are Basic Pay Rs 30,000, Constituency Allowance Rs 25,000, Secretarial Allowance Rs 15,000, Telephone Allowance Rs 10,000 and Conveyance Allowance.
