JAIPUR: Nine students from Rajasthan, who were among 219 Indian students stuck in war-torn Ukraine and managed to reach Romanian capital Bucharest to board the first Air India rescue flight, finally reached Mumbai around 9pm on Saturday.
“From Mumbai, the students will reach Jaipur via air arranged by the state. They are likely to reach their homes by Sunday,” said Dhiraj Shrivastavachairman of Rajasthan Foundation.
Shrivastava has been appointed as the nodal officer to coordinate with the Union ministry of external affairs and the Indian embassy in Ukraine. The medical students from the state are Rishi Chainani (Ajmer), Jyotiyana Ashi (Ajmer), Shivani Sharma (Bhilwara), Manish Gyan (Kota), Yavnnika Sen (Kota), Joya Ansari (Kota), Justy Jamin (Jaipur), Shivani Singh (Jaipur) and Shivani Sharma. These students were taken to Rajasthan House in Mumbai. They will board the flight to Jaipur on Sunday.
“The next flight from Bucharest to Delhi carrying nine students from the state will arrive on Sunday,” said Shrivastava. He added that they have data of about 450 students from the state after reaching out to either universities or the Indian embassy in Ukraine. “A number of students from the state are on the way to Poland as we are talking. They are stuck in massive traffic snarl of 50 km from the Polish border. Once they reach the Indian high commission, officials will register them to scheduled special flights,” said the commissioner.
“Data from universities, helpline numbers and independent sources say the number of students from the state is between 700 and 800. The exact number of students that reached the four exit points/countries (Romania, Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary) cannot be ascertained . The office is in touch with the embassies in these respective countries too,” said the commissioner, who is hoping to reach out to all state residents in a day or two. Surprisingly, none of the non-medical students or families has come in contact with the commissioner’s office or sought any assistance.
