The national capital had 628 Covid cases and three deaths due to the viral disease on Monday, while the positivity rate was recorded at 8.06 per cent.

According to the data released by the city’s health department, there were 865 new infections of coronavirus in Delhi on Thursday and no deaths were reported. The data said that the test positivity rate was recorded at 4.45 per cent in the last 24 hours.

The city had recorded 1,109 cases on Wednesday with a positivity rate of 5.87 per cent and a fatality rate. According to health department data, the new cases were detected out of 19,435 tests conducted on the previous day.

With the fresh infections, Delhi’s case tally rose to 19,34,874, while the death toll stood at 26,261. On Tuesday, Delhi had recorded 874 fresh COVID-19 cases and four deaths due to the infection, while the positivity rate stood at 5.18 per cent.

The national capital had 628 Covid cases and three deaths due to the viral disease on Monday, while the positivity rate was recorded at 8.06 per cent. The department said that out of 9,490 beds for Covid patients in city hospitals, only 258 were occupied, down from 273 a day ago, while beds in Covid care centers and COVID health centers are lying vacant.

Doctors say that with the recent increase in the number of Covid cases in Delhi, hospitals are also witnessing a slight increase in admissions, but most of the patients have co-morbid conditions. There are 3,914 active Covid cases in the capital, up from 4,325 a day ago. Out of 3,914 active cases, 2,817 are in home isolation.

There are 386 containment zones in the city as against 383 on Wednesday. Delhi had recorded 1,060 Covid cases on June 20, while the positivity rate stood at 10.09 per cent. This was the highest positivity rate recorded in the capital since January 24, when 11.8 per cent of those tested turned out to be Covid positive.

Also, the death toll in a single day was the highest since February 13, when 12 people succumbed to the viral infection. Delhi has also reported a few cases of ba.4 and ba.5 variants of Omicron, which are highly transmissible, but experts say there is no need to panic as they do not cause serious infections.

Despite the increase in the positivity rate, the Delhi government has not implemented the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) prepared by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) as hospitalizations are low. The GRAP came into force in August last year, stipulating the measures to be taken by the government for locking and unlocking of various activities according to the positivity rate and bed occupancy.

Experts have said that people letting their guard down and traveling during the holiday season are the main reasons behind the latest rise in the number of coronavirus cases in Delhi. During the third wave of the pandemic, the number of daily COVID-19 cases in Delhi touched a record high of 28,867 on January 13.

The city had recorded a positivity rate of 30.6 per cent on January 14, the highest during the third wave of the pandemic.
