84% of Southeast Asian professionals and 76% of Latin American professionals value upskilling when it comes to future-proofing their careers

In its ‘Upskilling Trends Report 2023’, edtech platform Great Learning revealed that at least 85 per cent professionals consider upskilling to be future-friendly in their careers, compared to 76 per cent globally. A total of 84 percent of Southeast Asian professionals and 76 percent of Latin American professionals value upskilling when it comes to future-proofing their careers. In contrast, only 64 percent and 66 percent of professionals from more developed regions such as the US and the Middle East, respectively, consider upskilling to be important to secure their careers in the future, the report said.

The report claimed that professionals in international markets were less confident about their job security till 2023, given the uncertain macroeconomic conditions. The report said that while 71 per cent professionals in India are confident of retaining their jobs in 2023, the global average is 59 per cent. While 59 per cent professionals in the US are confident of retaining their jobs, the figure is 60 per cent in South-East Asia and 50 per cent in the Middle East. When asked about the hindrances professionals find affordability and office work.

Arjun Nair, co-founder of Great Learning, said, “With the current economic climate and the fact that traditional roles are slowly being replaced by new, sophisticated jobs, there is a sense of apprehension among professionals looking to compete at the highest level. The Global Upskilling Trends 2023 report will shed light on the way forward in this context, including upskilling intent, motivation to upskill, currently in-demand skills, and more. Globally, 74 percent of professionals need to upskill. With the plan, demand is already strong and we are confident that it will only grow from here.

Professionals in the Middle East find it challenging to upskill due to family commitments. Most of the professionals in India find it difficult to upskill due to being ‘busy with office work’. The report said that ‘affordable’ and ‘office work’ are the biggest barriers for women in Southeast Asia, while family commitments and domestic work have stopped women from moving forward in other regions.
