8 Bills, Shifting In New Building: What Does Parliament Special Session Have?

New Delhi: The five-day parliamentary session will begin on Monday, September 18, 2023, amid speculation over whether the government has any surprises in store.

However, the Centre has clarified that a total of eight bills have been included in the list for consideration during the session. The information was given by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi.

8 Bill Likely To Be Introduced

At the all-party meeting, senior leaders were informed that a bill on senior citizen welfare and three bills related to SC/ST orders have been added to the agenda.

Among the bills listed earlier is the bill to appoint the Chief Election Commissioner and the Election Commissioner. During the last monsoon session, a Bill for Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners was introduced in Rajya Sabha.

The bill has attracted severe criticism from the opposition as it seeks to put their service conditions on par with those of cabinet secretaries and not those of Supreme Court judges, as is currently the case. This is considered a deterioration in their stature.

While there is no official word on a possible new law, there have been rumors that a bill aimed at ensuring quota for women in elected legislatures like the Lok Sabha and Parliament could be introduced.

When asked about the government’s stand on demands from various parties to introduce a Women’s Reservation Bill during the five-day session, Joshi said the government will take an “appropriate decision on right time”.

Over the past few weeks, several parties, including BJD and BRS, have demanded the bill’s revival, while the Congress also passed a resolution in its favor during the Congress Working Committee meeting in Hyderabad, on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar hoisted the national flag at the new Parliament building on Sunday morning.

The special session in new Parliament building will take place tomorrow on the ocassion of Ganesh Chaturthi.
