This is not the first case
This is not the first case of smuggling of gold paste in India. However, this is the first case at Amritsar airport. But on 11 December 2018 at Indira Gandhi International Airport, a person was caught with gold paste from Terminal-1. The accused had come from Dubai and was on his way to Mumbai. Gold worth Rs 15 lakh was recovered from him.

Smuggler escapes from metal detector
One of the major reasons for this method being adopted by smugglers is the conversion of gold into paste. Metal detectors are present in most of the airports in India in the name of security checks. When gold turns into a paste, they are no longer a metal. After which the metal detectors are unable to detect this gold paste and the accused escapes.
