70% of agricultural households have less than 1 hectare of land, finds survey – Times of India

In contrast, of the total non-agricultural households, which constitute 46% of the total rural households, those with less than 1 hectare of land account for about 99%. The remaining households that are in employment comprise 7.7% as regular salaried work, while the higher 14% are in casual Labour.
Among non-agricultural households, 48.6% are in casual labor while about 18% are in regular salaried work. Importantly, it is found that 8.2% of rural households are landless – this category is defined as those owning less than 0.002 hectares of land.
Social group-wise holdings in rural areas are an important finding. The Scheduled Castes hold 10.2 percent of the rural land while the Scheduled Tribes hold 14.1 percent of the total land. In contrast, “Other Backward Classes” own 47% of the land and “Others” have 28.5% of the land. Scheduled Castes account for about 16% of agricultural households while Scheduled Tribes constitute 14% and OBCs about 46%.
Livestock ownership data makes for interesting reading.
At least 48.5% of the households have “cattle” while 27.8% have buffalo. 10.7% have poultry birds while 21.9% have bovines and other mammals.
