7 Territorial Army personnel martyred in landslide in Manipur, over 45 missing

At least seven soldiers were killed and over 45 people, including civilians, went missing in a massive landslide in western Manipur’s Noni district on Thursday.

As per reports available with the Army Headquarters here, seven bodies of TA personnel were retrieved and 13 were rescued from the rubble. Rescue work is going on since morning. Three soldiers were rescued from Tupul railway station area, where the TA was posted to provide security for the construction of the railway line from Jiribam to Imphal, to Army for further medical treatment, a senior army official said. Helicopters were taken to Limakong Military Hospital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while reviewing the critical situation, assured central help to Manipur. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he reviewed the situation in the northeastern state and assured help from the central government. “Spoke to Manipur CM Shri @NBirenSingh ji and reviewed the situation due to a tragic landslide. Assured all possible help from the Centre. I pray for the safety of all affected. My condolences are with the bereaved families. Let the injured get well soon,” tweeted PM Modi.

Apart from the army, Assam Rifles and NDRF have also been pressed into the rescue operation.
