7 landslides in Meghalaya; Two people killed, houses, shops damaged

Two persons, including a 14-year-old boy, were killed on Monday due to a landslide in Mawlat village of Mawkinru block of Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district. Seven landslides were reported in the state on Monday, causing damage to several vehicles, shops, homes and public properties.

As per an official source, “A landslide occurred in Mavlat village under Maukinru block and two people died during the incident while they were passing through the area where the landslide took place. O/o BDO, PWD, DM & HO team was deputed for immediate response.”

The deceased have been identified as Rohit Shiar (14) of Mauvlat village and Dilibon Tangsang (35) of Maukaria village.

Another landslide occurred in Umbalai village where two houses and several shops were damaged. “One of the houses is that of Kro Shiar, which was completely damaged, and another house of Frangki Khongjoh has been partially damaged. Shops at Sangur Khongjoh and Khonti Marie Khongjoh were also affected by the landslide.

The third landslide occurred in Thangbanai-Mawlingote, which damaged a road while a vehicle was washed away. However, no casualties were reported and PWD officials have been deployed to clear the debris.

A landslide was also reported from Lingshing village, destroying five houses of residents of Jamin Surong, Judea Nongram, Kastina Nongram, Kirkhu Longshiang and Hamina. Officials said Hamina suffered minor injuries.

A portion of the road was uprooted in a landslide in the Wahumakhara River near Lamali Quarter. A part of the area has been cordoned off to prevent any mishap. The concerned officers were instructed to assess the damage immediately and carry out restoration work.

Another landslide occurred at a location of 33 km on Mawphlang Balat road under Mawsynram block. Debris has been cleared from the road and now vehicles have been allowed to ply.

A portion of the highway was cut off at a point above Saitabkon village in a landslide on the Shillong-Dawki road (NH-40). A vehicle got stuck at the spot. No casualties have been reported and all the occupants of the vehicle have been evacuated safely. Students stranded in the examination centers to write the board exam papers were assisted by the police to reach their destination. The repair work was started and now all the debris has been removed from the road. The PWD and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation have been directed to keep the teams on standby in case of any more adverse weather conditions.

Officials reached the spot to take stock of the damage caused during landslides at all these seven places. Relief material in the form of food grains, blankets etc. is also being distributed by the concerned district authorities to all the affected families.
