65% teacher burden, 92% training needed: NAS report

survey conducted by school department education and literacy, the Ministry of Education has revealed that at least 44 percent of school teachers in India do not have adequate work space. The survey also found that only 58 percent of teachers participated in discussions around the new National Education Policy (NEP).

Over 5 lakh teachers from 1.18 lakh schools in 720 districts, both rural and urban, had participated in the nationwide survey on November 12 last year. The last NAS was conducted in 2017. The technical report of the survey states that more than 2,70,000 teachers were sampled for the survey.

It said that only 42 percent of teachers participated in individual or collaborative research, while only 58 percent of teachers participated in discussions about the new NEP. While 97 per cent of the teachers claimed job satisfaction, at least 92 per cent of them believed that there is scope for professional growth.

The survey said that at least 52 per cent teachers participated in professional development programs conducted by DIET, CBSE and NCERT.

The survey highlights that in 2021, over 92 per cent of teachers feel that “there is scope for professional development of teachers in schools. They also found in the survey that 65 percent of the total surveyed teachers felt that they overworked. Additionally, 44 per cent of them also claim that they do not have enough space to work. Despite the challenges faced by teachers, a total of 97 per cent teachers claimed that they had job satisfaction. Nationally, only 7 percent of schools faced issues of teacher absenteeism, the survey said.

The National Comprehensive Survey is a report that assesses the health of the school education system in the country by conducting a survey assessing the learning ability of children in classes III, V, VIII and X with a cycle duration of three years. The previous NAS was conducted in 2017 and this survey is for 2021.

The survey was conducted on November 12, 2021 at an all India level and covered government schools (central government and state government); government aided schools; and private unaided schools. This nationwide survey was administered by CBSE same day at the same time. The survey covered subjects including language, maths and EVS for third and fifth grades; Language, Mathematics, Science and Social Science for class 8 and Language, Mathematics, Science, Social Science and English for class 10.
