600 Indian Districts Now Have 5G Services In Less Than 200 Days, Says Union Minister Devusinh Chauhan

Union Minister of State for Communications Devsingh Chouhan on Monday said that India has covered 600 districts with 5G services in less than 200 days, which is the fastest in the world.

Speaking at the second meeting of the G20 Digital Economy Working Group (DEWG) here, he said the central government’s public policies are fundamentally driven by the vision of ‘Antyodaya’ and have been conducive to inclusive welfare and growth.

“India has covered 600 districts with 5G in less than 200 days, which is the fastest in the world,” he was quoted as saying in an official release.

“India has the second largest telecom network with the lowest data rates in the world and the development of indigenous 4G, 5G technologies in a short span of time has stunned the world.” Union MoS for Social Justice and Empowerment A Narayanaswamy stressed on the ‘Digital Antyodaya’ approach and the Accessible India campaign to achieve universal access for differently-abled persons in the country.

In the inaugural session of the second meeting of the DEWG, Secretary, MeitY (Ministry of Electronics and IT), Alkesh Kumar Sharma welcomed the representatives of G20 members, invited countries, international organizations, MeitY, DoT (Department of Telecom) senior officials. The state government, along with others, and outlined the proceedings of the three-day event.

As part of the side events, DoT organized three thematic sessions.

The first thematic session titled ‘High Speed ​​Mobile Broadband and Its Impacts’ featured panelists like YGSC Kishor Babu, DDG-DoT-GoI (Moderator), Sithuraj Ponraj, Director (International Affairs), Govt. Singapore’s Arun Sharma, Senior Digital Specialist, World Bank, Rahul Shah, Director-APAC, GSMA, Abhishek Singh, President & CEO, NeGD, MeitY.

The panel discussed last mile high speed connectivity, digital services in social sectors (like education, health, agriculture, etc.), impact and innovation growth using AI, IoT, Industry 4.0, Society 5.0.

It was also discussed to take additional measures to fill the gaps in terms of access to mobile internet, smartphones and assistance to senior citizens and people in rural areas, the release said.

The second thematic session was organized on the theme ‘Digital Inclusion – Connecting the Unconnected’.

The panel emphasized on connecting all the individuals on the planet for digital transformation.

The third and final thematic session of the day was titled ‘Sustainable Green Digital Infrastructure: Challenges and Opportunities’.

The panel discussed in detail “Greening digital infrastructure and its intersection with physical infra of other sectors”, sustainable development goals, low carbon footprint, renewable energy, and recycling/recycling and efficient digital transformation.
