‘Students Islamic Movement of India’ i.e. SIMI was formed in the month of April 1977 in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. Mohammad Ahmadullah Siddiqui, a professor in the US state of Illinois, is said to be the founder of the organization. In India this organization was banned in the year 2001. Then the Government of India issued ordinances to ban it on two separate occasions. Since then its activities have been completely underground.

Initially, SIMI was known as the student wing of ‘Jamaat-e-Islami’, but in the year 1981 this organization split from ‘Jamaat-e-Islami’. SIMI follows the principle of establishment of an Islamic state and the basic idea of this organization is the spread of Islam.

On 9 September 2001, the then National President of SIMI, Dr. Shahid Badr Falahi said in Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh that comparison of SIMI with Bajrang Dal or Vishwa Hindu Parishad is not right. He claimed that SIMI is engaged in character building of Muslim students according to Shariat. The organization has 950 Ansars (active members) in 17 states of the country. SIMI surprised everyone when it opposed the visit of Yasser Arafat, leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) to India.

Arafat was also shown black flags by activists of the organization in 1981 and described him as an agent of Western countries. It was from here that the conflict between Jamaat-e-Islami and SIMI increased and Jamaat-e-Islami separated SIMI from the organization, because the Jamaat considered Arafat as a hero.
