5G subscriptions likely to cross 1 billion this year: Ericsson

Stockholm: Swedish telecommunications equipment maker Ericsson said on Tuesday it expects global 5G mobile subscriptions to exceed 1 billion in 2022, helping drive greater adoption in China and North America.

Uncertainties due to a weak global economy and Russia’s invasion Ukraine The company, in its biennial mobility report, lowered its estimate for 2022 by about 100 million.

Ericsson, which competes with China’s Huawei and Finland’s Nokia, is a major supplier of mobile gear, including 5G.

While 5G subscriptions increased by 70 million to approximately 620 million during the first quarter, 4G subscribers grew by 70 million to approximately 4.9 billion.

5G, or fifth generation, networks offer much higher speeds than previous generations, promising to connect machines in a way that could enable future features such as autonomous driving.

5G subscriptions are projected to reach 4.4 billion in 2027.

The report said that the growth of 4G users is expected to peak this year and then decline as customers move to 5G. Ericsson had earlier expected 4G subscriptions to peak last year.

With 5G subscribers reaching 1 billion this year, it will reach two years earlier than 4G, which achieved 1 billion subscribers 10 years after its launch.

The report’s executive editor Peter Jonsson said in an interview that pressure from telecom operators to bring 5G and handset prices down to $120 has helped 5G adoption. “China added about 270 million users in 2021, compared to North America, which added 65 million.”

India, which is in the process of auctioning 5G airwaves, is expected to witness increased subscriber growth from the end of this year.

“We expect about 30 million 5G customers in India in 2022 and about 50 million in 2023,” Jonsson said.
