Stakeholders of the telecom industry on Monday cautioned the public against frauds related to the installation of mobile towers at its properties in the country as it prepares for the 5G roll out.

TR Dua, Director General, DIPA said, “It is taking several steps to alert the public about IP frauds and to collect information about possible locations through various channels like toll-free numbers, websites, emails etc. Various methods have been devised for this.”

The industry bodies requested the people to verify the authenticity by visiting the websites of TSPs or IPs before accepting any offer for tower installation.

“Mobile towers are quintessential for ensuring seamless connectivity, supporting various critical services and maintaining communication across states. The public is suffering gravely due to frauds related to mobile towers,” said Lt Gen Dr SP Kochhar, DG, COAI.

This is creating a sense of insecurity and lack of trust in the team personnel working on the ground to build a strong communication network.

“The Telecom Industry is committed to provide best quality services to its customers. Hence, we have collaborated with DIPA to build the required robust infrastructure,” Kochhar said.

According to reports, more than 6.8 lakh mobile towers have been installed across the country and more than 15 lakh towers are to be installed by FY24, as the country prepares for 5G.
