5G and Metaverse: Both need each other and India needs both for its digital future

In her budget speech this year, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said that the spectrum required would be auctioned in 2022, to allow the rollout of 5G mobile services in 2022-23.

Union Minister of Communications and Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnav said that “the country has developed its own indigenous 4G core and radio network…[and] The 5G network is also in the final stages of development.

However, all these announcements are being made at a time when a new term – metaverse – is gaining popularity across the world and in India as well. It is worth noting here that according to industry experts, both 5G and Metaverse are intertwined.

Speaking to News18.com, Ambareesh Ray, Co-Founder and CEO, Digital Dogs Content and Media, explained how the two are co-related and why 5G is important to the metaverse.

Edited excerpt:

How can 5G help the metaverse?

I think both 5G and Metaverse need each other. There comes a time in scaling technology, where one track grows faster than another. The distributed cloud architecture and digital infrastructure required for scaling only makes sense commercially as well as in terms of adoption when there is a scaled metaverse.

Similarly, the metaverse can only scale if seamless entertainment of reality is possible on a large scale and affordably.

Think of building a multiplex with hundreds of screens but films release at the rate of 2-3 a week. Or movies are released at the rate of 100 per week but the screens are largely single screen theatres.

The point is, this is the biggest synergy opportunity in technology, a field not known for synergy in its invention plans. Most of the technology is manufactured first and then seeks alliances and adoption. In this case, with the metaverse and 5G (even early stage 6G), statistically significant growth and synergy to scale is important.

Will both 5G and Metaverse change India’s digital future?

5G and other scaled technologies are not only good but are major requirements for India. It may sound strange, but we need 5G more than some other so-called “developed” economies. Check out 5G’s advantages and key box features – from ultra-huge network capacity to very low latency and high peak data speeds.

All this, is needed for a country of 1.5 billion leaping with a vengeance. We cannot shelter our ambitions of world domination with rusty weapons.

On the other hand, the metaverse is a great opportunity to build on realities and make connections in those realities. India is a market that is culturally conducive to something like the metaverse in its DNA.

From alternative, virtual, augmented and mixed realities to avatar-making, world-building and created virtual markets, India and Indians are familiar with it. Spell All of this. Nothing is as it seems and everything is unreal. he is Spell, Isn’t the metaverse the same?

What are the challenges in popularizing the Metaverse?

the measure. That is the main challenge. Be it India, other developing economies or even developed cultures. The adoption rate and engagement cycle should be massive. It is interesting to see whether one reality cannibalizes the other. For now, scaling is the most important point to drive.

Coming in as a dependency factor is, of course, infrastructure. Virtual, cloud, physical as well as communication networks.

Then there is the whole social support aspect – important gatekeepers and social voices such as academics, thinkers and even psychologists. Overall approval and NOC (No Objection Certificate) from these quarters is an absolute must in the long run.

What are the cyber security issues in the Metaverse?

We’re having a hard time protecting our world, let alone the universe. The Metaverse is an alternate universe. It will eventually develop its own system and entropy. We can best protect our world inside the metaverse.

Look, the point of the metaverse is that it’s not just about protecting certain groups or even larger communities. It’s free and shape-changing in that sense. Of course, there are basic principles of security protocols, network threat assessment, etc. But the larger issues of data security, protection of interests and security etc. are not yet clear to most of the metaverse. This is a long time ago.

How do you see the growth of Metaverse in India in the coming years?

Metaverse, as a concept for marketing and C-suite execution with ideas, words and actions, as well as actionable strategies and deployment, will see a boom in India. India is no longer that isolated from the world markets and over the past decade, culturally also India has been in sync with world cultures when it comes to consumption, purchases, expectations and experiences.

It will be interesting to see how the metaverse adapts and adapts to a purely Indian context, especially when it comes to D2C and edgy B2C dramas. I look forward to seeing the metaverse play out in cola, fruit-based drinks, pop culture fashion and ales and entertainment sectors.
