Crop failure or damage due to bad weather, debt, harassment by moneylenders, difficulties in transportation/sale of their produce and pandemic disruptions are believed to drive the cases.
Mahanteshappa, joint director of the agriculture department, told TOI that a panel headed by an assistant commissioner was tasked with distributing the compensation. The department has received 43 applications from the bereaved families. The panel has examined 32, out of which seven have been rejected as they do not meet the criteria. The government has already sanctioned Rs 5 lakh (each) to 20 families.
Mahanteshappa urged families to submit all necessary documents as applications are scrutinized at various levels of administration.
