52 Tigers Dead in First Four Months of 2023, Highest Number in Last Three Years, Shows Data

Four of the 52 tiger deaths occurred in the past week alone and one big cat died every day from April 1 to April 4, according to an analysis of data by the National Tiger Conservation Authority.

A total of 52 tigers have died this year, out of which four deaths have been recorded in the last week itself. This is the biggest figure of death of tigers in the last three years despite being the Prime Minister. According to an analysis of data done by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) on April 4, Madhya Pradesh – known as the ‘tiger state’ – reported the maximum number of tiger deaths at 15.

The data shows that four of these 52 deaths occurred in the last week alone and from April 1 to April 4, one big cat died per day – Maharashtra and Kerala’s Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary reported one death each; An adult and a cub died in separate incidents in Madhya Pradesh’s Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve.

In the last 10 years, the total number of tiger deaths per year is as follows: 116 in 2022, 127 in 2021, 106 in 2020, 96 in 2019, 101 in 2018, 117 in 2017, 121 in 2016, 86 in 2015, 2014 78 in 2013, and 68 in 2013.

The NTCA data further showed that natural causes were responsible for most of the deaths, followed by poisoning, forgery, shooting, electrocution and poaching. According to statistics, mortality increases in winter.

Overall, from 2012 to 2022, January saw the highest number of tiger deaths at 128, followed by March at 123. The lowest number of 43 people died in September. Mortality begins to decline in the later months of winter.

Prime Minister Modi released the census data on the occasion of completion of 50 years of ‘Project Tiger 1973’ in Mysore, Karnataka. The latest census shows that there are 3,167 tigers in India by 2022. To reach this number, the country’s tiger population has increased by 200 in the last four years.

The Prime Minister also launched the International Big Cats Alliance (IBCA) and said that India is home to 75 per cent of the world’s tiger population. He released ‘Amrit Kaal Ka Tiger Vision’, a booklet presenting his vision for tiger conservation in the next 25 years.
