The contours of the farmers’ movement were formed when the central government brought an ordinance on June 5, 2020, regarding agricultural laws during the Corona period. The farmers’ organizations of Punjab started opposing them. Peasant leaders fighting with different ideologies raised against these ordinances in unison. Among them Joginder Singh Ugrahan, President of Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) Ugrahan, Balbir Singh Rajewal, Ajmer Singh Lakhhowal, Harmeet Singh Qadian are some of the names who went out of the territorial realm to become the face of farmers in the country.

Whether it is the work of contacting the farmers of other states during the movement or the exercise of crossing the barricades and potholes on the way during the Delhi march. There were some faces whose planning gave a special shape to this movement. It was the hard work of these faces that in this historical movement that lasted for more than a year, there was no violent clash except for sporadic incidents.

Joginder Singh Ugrahan: From ex-serviceman to farmer’s sympathizer…

Joginder Singh Ugrahan, president of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan), was born in Sunam and served in the army. Due to family problems, left the army and came to Punjab and got involved in farming. From here, small struggles were started to solve the problems of the people. First joined the Bharatiya Kisan Union and formed Bhakiyu (Ugrahan) in 2002. Through his organization, he fought directly with the government and administration on small issues of the farmers. Most of the farmers and working class in Malwa and Majha areas of Punjab are associated with their organization. The Ugrahans were not directly associated with any political party but were inclined towards the Congress. He has been considered closer to Captain Amarinder.

Balbir Rajewal: After the army, the battle of the peasantry

Balveer Singh Rajewal was born in Rajewal village near Khanna in Ludhiana district. After primary schooling, he joined the army. After retirement, came to Punjab and took interest in the ongoing struggle of the farmers here. First worked in Kisan Zindabad Union and formed Bharatiya Kisan Union (Rajewal) around 1990. Strongly took the lead during the struggle against agricultural laws. Rajewal is not associated with any political party yet. There have been discussions that the Aam Aadmi Party offered him to join the party and contest as the Chief Minister. Banners of becoming the Chief Minister were put up in his own area.

Dr. Darshan Pal: became a doctor by studying in candle light

Dr. Darshan Pal of village Ranbirpura in Patiala spent his childhood in extreme poverty. After studying by candlelight, MD in Anesthesia and started practicing in Sangrur. His association with the freedom fighter and social worker Jai Prakash Narayan Movement came from the struggle. The effect of this movement was that even after becoming a doctor, he started raising his voice against the government with the Bharatiya Kisan Union. In 2002, leaving the practice, completely plunged into the farmers’ struggle. The organizations of Dr. Darshanpal are not big but have emerged as the main faces of the movement. He is not associated with any political party.

Rajinder Singh Deep Singh Wala: The struggle continues since childhood

Rajinder Singh Deep Wala, born in Deep Singh Wala, the village of Faridkot, the leader of Punjab’s leaders, first struggled with poverty. In Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Rajinder joined Punjab Student Union. Advocacy pass Rajinder played an important role in the long struggle in Faridkot to lift the girl from home. Joined Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee and later Kirti Kisan Union and answered every question of the government against agricultural laws. Rajinder is not associated with any political party and stands against politicians over the smallest of things.

Harmeet Kadian: Struggling for agricultural laws in Majha-Malwa

Harmeet Singh Qadian, president of the Indian Farmers Union, Qadian, has been fighting for agricultural laws in Majha and some areas of Malwa. When the talk of opposing the agricultural laws started, he came forward. Last year he started protesting at Ladoval toll plaza and for a year his organization is standing here. Harmeet belongs to a middle-class farmer family. His inclination is not directly with any political party. However, by staying behind the scenes, he has been in touch with Captain Amarinder Singh.

Jagmohan and Pandher also played an important role

Jagmohan Singh of village Karma in Ferozepur district, adjacent to the Indo-Pak border, is associated with the Indian Farmers Union Dakonda. Jagmohan became a full-time social worker after the 1984 anti-Sikh massacre. He played a leading role in various demonstrations in the state. Jagmohan, who currently plays a leading role in a coalition of 30 farmer organizations, is respected by all for his sincerity towards the farmers’ struggle.

Sarwan Singh Pandher of village Pandher in Amritsar district is the general secretary of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Samiti. The main base of the organization is in 10 districts of Malwa besides Majha, Doaba. Pandher played a major role in the present movement. Pandher is being seen as a moving forward movement leader. A graduate in studies, Pandher remained in movements from student life. 42-year-old Pandher did not marry by dedicating his life to social service.
