5 Bihu artists died on the spot as SUV

Five members of the Bihu protest team died on the spot and several others were seriously injured while boarding a Bolero pickup van on the highway in Assam’s Gohpur on Saturday.

The incident happened when the team was returning after their performance. The injured have been admitted to Tezpur Medical College Hospital.

Expressing grief over the deaths, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter to offer condolences to the bereaved families. The deceased have been identified as Sanjay Basumatari (17), Koliman Basumatari (21), Bornali Boro (15), Buddhimoti Boro (14) and Radhika Daimary (15).

“The victims were on their way home from a Bihu ceremony. The five injured have been admitted to Gohpur Civil Hospital and Catholic Hospital in Borang. The administration has been asked to monitor the situation and provide all necessary help to the injured. I pray for his speedy recovery,” Sarma said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also expressed grief over the accident. “Saddened at the loss of lives due to a road accident in Vishwanath district of Assam. Condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. I pray that the injured get well soon.”

The northeastern states celebrated Rongali Bihu and Poila Boishakh on Friday with traditional fervor and enthusiasm.

Lakhs of happy men, women and children in traditional and innovative attire took part in Bihu and Poila Boishakh celebrations, mostly in five of the eight northeastern states – Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya.

People in Assam and other northeastern states were engulfed in the spirit of Rongali or Bohag Bihu, the start of the Assamese New Year, giving a glimpse of the pre-pandemic festivities.
