2nd Test: West Indies 69-1 after bowling out Sri Lanka for 204 on the second day

West Indies got off to a steady start for the second day of the second cricket Test on Tuesday to reach 69-1 after bowling out Sri Lanka for 204 before rain struck out.

Left-arm spinners Veerasamy Parmoul and Jomel Warican took nine Sri Lankan wickets with career-best performances.

West Indies captain Craig Brathwaite was on 22 and Nakhruma Bonner was on 1 when the game was called. The tourists trailed Sri Lanka by 135 runs with nine wickets in hand.

Parmoul took his first five-wicket haul in more than five years, scoring 5-35 in his first Test.

Warrickan took 4-50, also a career best.

The pair ensured that they reversed a good start from Sri Lanka which had an opening partnership of 106 runs. The last nine wickets went for 98 runs.

Sri Lanka resumed at 113-1, and Pathum Nisanka and Oshada Fernando added a total of 26 runs before Permaul was hit in the seventh over of the day. Fernando tried to play a cut shot close to his body and Joshua da Silva overtook him for 18.

Permaul took two wickets in an over, reducing Nissanka lbw for 73 and ending an innings that lasted 148 deliveries and included a six and five fours. After two deliveries, he got Dhananjay de Silva caught for 2 runs.

Charith Aslanka, playing his first Test, scored 10 runs before Permaul became the next wicket at the hands of Bonner.

Angelo Mathews walked off the field with an injury when he was on 12, but returned with the fall of the eighth wicket, even though he was unable to run. He hit two sixes and a four before being bowled for 29 by Warrican and ended Sri Lanka’s first innings.

West Indies’ lone wicket was taken by Sri Lanka’s own left-handed batsman Praveen Jayavikrama, who trapped Jermaine Blackwood for 44. He faced 99 balls and hit five fours and reviewed the unsuccessful decision.

Rain is playing a big part in the match, with two losing sessions on day one and a session’s worth of overs on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka won the first Test at the same venue by 187 runs, and West Indies would have to win the second to draw the series.
