Dakshina Kannada (Karnataka), June 7 (IANS)| Twenty-four students studying in a college in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district were on Tuesday banned from attending classes for a period of seven days for wearing hijab.

The decision was taken after the Uppinangadi Degree College authorities in Puttur taluk refused to attend classes without students taking off their hijabs.

Tuesday’s incident comes at a time when the Karnataka government has issued guidelines for schools and colleges, making uniform mandatory for students without giving any place to wear hijab in classrooms.

Although most students are choosing to attend classes, a section insists on allowing them to attend classes wearing hijab.

Many students belonging to minority community have applied for transfer certificates from educational institutions to join other colleges where hijab is allowed.

The college management has also told the students that those who want to attend the class wearing hijab can take a transfer certificate.

The hijab crisis that started as a protest by six students of Udupi Pre-University Girls’ College has become a major issue in Karnataka in the past one year.
