227 crore words spoken in 11 days: Tamil Nadu students set record in ‘reading marathon’ as part of ‘Illam Thedi Kalvi’

First of its kind, 12 day Reading Marathon movement organized by School Department education Under the ‘Illam Thedi Kalvi’ (home-to-house education) scheme, 227 crore words have been pronounced by 17 lakh students of classes 2 to 8 with the help of an app called Read Along, launched by the department.

The School Education Department has set up home-based education centers in all the districts of the state to address the learning deficit of school children due to COVID-19. Presently, more than 33 lakh students are benefiting from this scheme. A reading movement titled ‘Reading Marathon’ was organized from June 1 to 12 with an aim to improve the reading skills of students in Tamil Nadu.

Of these, till June 11, school children read a total of 227 crore words correctly. Meanwhile, school education officials said, “The reading movement has been welcomed by the children from the very beginning. Volunteers trained students using the ‘Google Read Along’ app through mobile phones and students using their parents’ mobile phones. In addition, students from Lalgudi in Trichy district, Alanganallur and Melur blocks in Madurai and Gudiyatham in Vellore are leaders in reading words. Incentives will be given to the best performing educational centers.

‘The students were interested in the word games and at the end of each game, they were excited to collect the prizes on the app. Many such programs will also be organized in the near future to improve the reading habit of school children.
