20th anniversary of 9/11 attacks: How air travel changed with tight security measures

20th anniversary of 9/11 attacks The tragic 9/11 attacks that shook the United States on September 11, 2001 changed the way the world traveled, along with other dire repercussions.

Security procedures were normalized after 9/11, in which Continental Airlines searched former President APJ Abdul Kalam before boarding a US-bound flight from India in April 2009.

In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, security concerns have continued to result in the addition of the checks and restrictions that travelers have to go through.

Some of the travel restrictions imposed after the terrorist attacks are as follows:

Documentation: The documentation process for a US visa has become much more detailed in terms of obtaining information about travelers. Passenger profiling has also increased.

“The Advance Passenger Information System was since introduced, under which complete details of all passengers traveling to the US are sent immediately after check-in closes. This list is closely scrutinized as the plane leaves for the US and then questioned in detail on suspicious arrivals on arrival,” TOI quoted top airline officials as saying.

Baggage Screening: After 9/11, heavily armed National Guard troops could be seen patrolling airports. Knives, razors and many other potentially dangerous items were banned. The law also requires all checked baggage to be checked.

Scanning: Newly advanced image body scanners can detect small objects that are not normal to the contour of the body. High-risk and unknown passengers are scanned through the programmes. Voluntary facial recognition and biometric screening are also reported at some airports.

to frisk: In the US, it was made mandatory for airlines to re-search passengers at the boarding gate. Airport officials make passengers sit in an enclosed area where they do not come into contact with people traveling to other destinations.

During flights: In airplanes, armored locks and cameras were installed in the cockpit doors. After 9/11, it is necessary for pilots to check who is knocking to enter the flight deck before unlocking.

Access to the jump seats became very restricted behind the pilots’ seats.

After 9/11, it is the coronavirus pandemic that has once again brought about drastic changes in people’s travel experiences, such as masking, social distancing, sharing of COVID test results, vaccination proofs, and more.
