2020 saw 190% rise in seizure of fake currency notes: Nityanand Rai | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The number of fake Indian currency notes (FICN) seized in 2020 rose sharply by over 190 per cent to 8,34,947 from 2,87,404 in 2019, the home ministry informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
MoS (Home) Nityanand Raiin reply to a question, said that as per the latest data compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), over 20.17 lakh counterfeit notes of various denominations were recovered between 2016, the year of demonetisation, and 2020. The face value of such fake notes comes to around Rs 180 crore.
Of the 8.34 lakh counterfeit currency notes recovered in 2020, the highest 3.1 lakh notes were of Rs 1,000 denomination, which had become illegal tender in 2016, followed by those of Rs 2,000 denomination (2.4 lakh notes) and Rs 500 denomination (approx. 2.1 lakh).
The sharpest rise between 2019 and 2020 was in the number of Rs 1,000 denomination notes seized, from 28,541 to 3.1 lakh (170 per cent), followed by Rs 2,000 notes with recoveries rising from 90,556 notes to 2.4 lakh notes (over 1000 per cent) .
