Sri Lanka’s previous biggest win was in 2004 when they beat Zimbabwe by an innings and 254 runs in Bulawayo.

Prabhat Jayasuriya’s 10-wicket haul helped Sri Lanka beat Ireland by an innings and 280 runs on Tuesday, one of the biggest margins of victory in Test history.

In Sri Lanka’s biggest ever win, as well as Ireland’s worst ever defeat, the visitors were bundled out for 168 on the third day at a sultry seaside Galle Stadium after being forced to follow-on.

“(Ireland) are new to this format and they are still learning about this format. But I think they were really good and they will be a good team in the future as well,” Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne said later.

It was the 12th biggest innings victory in Test history, behind England’s victory over the West Indies by an innings and 283 runs in 2007.

Sri Lanka’s previous biggest win was in 2004 when they beat Zimbabwe by an innings and 254 runs in Bulawayo.

Ireland have now lost all five of their matches since gaining Test status in 2017. Their previous biggest defeat was a 143-run loss to England in 2019.

In the first Test between the two sides, Sri Lanka made the Irish fielders work hard from the outset, scoring 591 for 6 in their first innings after declaring on the second day.

Karunaratne top-scored with 179, while Kusal Mendis scored 140. After this, Dinesh Chandimal and Sadeera Samarawickrama scored unbeaten centuries.

Sri Lanka then bowled Ireland out for 143 at the ropes for 4–2, with Jayasuriya taking a career-best 7–52 and Lorcan Tucker scoring 45.

With a first innings lead of 448, Sri Lanka forced the follow on, reducing them to 40–5 before lunch, but Harry Tector and Curtis Kampfer fought off a 60-run stand.

The partnership was broken when Nishan Madushka took a fine reflex catch at short leg to dismiss Kampfer for 30 and give Ramesh Mendis his second wicket of the innings.

Mendis took four wickets, becoming the joint-fastest Sri Lankan player to 50 Test wickets with off-spinner Dilruwan Perera after his 11th appearance.

The 23-year-old right-handed tall batsman was looking impressive with solid defense despite taking a nasty hit on the ribs from Asita Fernando’s delivery.

But his promising innings was cut short when he pushed one towards mid-off and rushed for a single but there was no response from the non-striker.

In the middle of the pitch, he turned back, slipped and despite diving could not save himself, being dismissed for 42.

Jayasuriya got another three scalps, trapping Ben White leg-before for one, including the last fall.
