Gill laid the foundation for the victory with an innings of 208 as India posted a mammoth 349/8 in 50 overs. In reply, Michael Bracewell scored a sensational century to keep New Zealand’s hopes from chasing, but Mohammed Siraj once again ran wild with the ball and took 4 wickets to restrict New Zealand to 337 in 49.2 overs.

Siraj, who was playing his first ODI on home ground, claimed the wicket at a crucial juncture of the game, helping India take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Bracewell fought hard for the visitors till the final over as he remained unbeaten on 140 off 78 balls, which included 10 sixes and 12 fours. He put India on the backfoot with a massive 162-run seventh-wicket partnership with Mitchell Santner, but Siraj broke the momentum of the Kiwis a bit by taking a couple of wickets in his 10th over. Santner was dismissed for 57 which swung the momentum back in India’s favour.

New Zealand needed 24 runs from the last two overs but India managed to win as Bracewell’s heroic effort went in vain. Hardik Pandya conceded just four runs in the last over and took the wicket of Lockie Ferguson.

Shardul Thakur was assigned to bowl the last over and he hit a six off the very first ball and followed it up with a wide. Under immense pressure, Shardul bowled a yorker to trap Bracewell in front of the wicket as India won the match by 12 runs.

Earlier, Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat against a confident New Zealand, who recently beat Pakistan 2-1, in the series opener on Wednesday.

Rohit stitched a solid 60-run partnership with Gill to give India a solid start. New Zealand made a comeback by taking Rohit’s wicket Virat Kohli and Ishan Kishan in quick succession. However, Shubman stood firm as the Kiwis were not looking clear against their class.

Gill joined the elusive list of players after scoring a sensational double century on Wednesday. The talented young opener has been in sensational form in recent times and played a knock of 208 runs to help India post a mammoth 349/8 on the scoreboard. Gill brought up his maiden half-century in 52 balls before bringing up his century in 87 balls. He then went from 100 to 150 in 35 balls, and the jump from 150 to 200 in just 23 balls, with an overall strike rate of 139.6, helping India reach almost 350. His brilliant innings included 19 fours and 9 sixes. ,
