Rashid Khan took three wickets and one run out as Afghanistan beat Netherlands by 36 runs in the first match of the three-match One Day International series in Doha on Friday.

Half-centuries from captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (73) and Rahmat Shah (70) allowed Afghanistan to make 222/8 after coming into bat.

Right-arm pacer Brandon Glover returned 3/43 and left-arm seamer Fred Klaasen returned decent figures of 2/39 to restrict Afghanistan to a modest total.

Wicketkeeper and opener Scott Edwards put up a solid foundation for the Dutch with a 68 off 82 balls as they made a solid start to their chase, reaching 121/3.

But there was a collapse in the 31st over with the dismissal of Edwards bowled by off-spinner Mujeeb ur Rahman, which bundled out the Netherlands for 186 runs.

Captain Peter Seelar added 32 runs before being bowled by Yamin Ahmedzai, leaving his side needing 71 runs in the last 10 overs.

The Netherlands lost three of their final five wickets courtesy of run-outs, with Rashid removing Saqib Zulfiqar and Philippe Boisven and adding to their earlier dismissal of Bass de Leede.

The series is part of the World Cup Super League, which will determine the qualifiers for the 2023 Cricket World Cup.

The second match is to be held on Sunday with the final ODI on January 25.
