18 OTT Platforms, 19 Websites, 10 Apps Banned In India Over ‘Obscene, Vulgar’ Content

A total of 18 OTT platforms, 19 websites, 10 apps (7 on Google Play Store, 3 on Apple App Store), and 57 social media accounts associated with these platforms have been banned by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) for publishing obscene, vulgar, and, in some instances, pornographic content, on Thursday.

The public access to these platforms have been restricted in India.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur has repeatedly underlined that the platforms posting obscenity, vulgarity and abuse under the name of ‘creative expression’ is solely their responsibility.

Earlier on March 12, Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) banned a total of 18 OTT platforms publishing obscene and vulgar content.

As per the statement released by the ministry, after consultation with other Ministries/Departments of the Government of India and domain experts specialising in media and entertainment, women’s rights, and child rights, the ministry have taken the decision under the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
