The Defense Ministry said on Friday that 18 major platforms, including naval ship-borne unmanned aerial systems and light tanks, had been identified for their design and development by the private sector. The move is part of the ministry’s larger goal of promoting the domestic defense industry.
Apart from ship-borne unmanned aerial systems and light tanks, other major platforms to be developed under the initiative are: hypersonic glide vehicles, unmanned autonomous AI-based land robots, 127 mm naval guns, electric propulsion (engines) for ships. ) and standoff air jammer. In line with the government’s focus on promoting self-reliance in defense manufacturing, 18 key platforms have been identified for industry-led design and development, the ministry said.

The DAP said that the ‘Make-I’ category is aimed at achieving self-reliance. Including greater participation of Indian industry in the development of defense equipment.
The ministry said in a statement that there are plans to develop two platforms under the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) model. Under the SPV model, private industries are being encouraged to design and develop military platforms and equipment in collaboration with Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and other organizations. The platforms identified for development under the SPV model are Long Range Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Indian Multi-Role Helicopters (IMRH).
A platform called Low Orbit Pseudo Satellites will be developed under the iDEX programme, an initiative to promote start-ups and MSMEs. The ministry said that anti-jamming systems are being developed for several platforms under the ‘Make-II’ category. Projects under the ‘Make-II’ category are funded by the industry with assured procurement by the government.
