Police said the vehicle was heading towards Hassan when it hit an electric pole and overturned.
Belur DSP Nagesh Said that investigation is being done whether the calves were being taken to the slaughterhouse.
“After being alerted around 10.30 pm, our personnel reached the spot and administered first aid to the calves who survived the accident. On Thursday morning, our team conducted the postmortem of 18 calves who would have died of suffocation. Of the dead calves, 3-4 suffered external injuries and were bleeding internally. The calves were stuffed into the vehicle with their feet and mouth tightly tied, apparently to stop them from screaming,” Dr. Gangadhar NayakAssistant Director, Veterinary Hospital (Belur).
