According to a recent survey conducted on over 50,000 people in 26 countries, it was found that 11 percent of the world’s population experiences abdominal pain after having a meal. The findings, based on the Rome Foundation Global Epidemiology Study 2, were recently presented at UEG Week Virtual 2021.

According to the study, people who experience abdominal pain after a meal are also more likely to have bloating and abdominal bloating. They feel uncomfortable even after eating or face the problem of constipation or diarrhea.

The same group also had more severe psychological distress and somatic symptoms (which were not gastrointestinal). According to an ANI report, “A total of 36 percent of people with recurrent food-related pain were suffering from anxiety, compared to 25 percent in the occasional symptom group and 18 percent among those who never experienced food-related pain.” “

The report further noted that people with a higher frequency of post-meal abdominal pain also reported higher rates of depression (35 percent). Sometimes up to twenty-four percent of people who experience these symptoms may also be experiencing depression.

Research found that post-meal abdominal pain is most common among young people aged 18 to 28, of whom 15 percent are affected.
