11 Do’s of Yoga – Times of India

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, yoga has become a part of many people’s daily routine. People who don’t like gymming often turn to yoga for their daily dose of physical activity. The best part is that you don’t need any equipment to do yoga, all you need is a little space and a yoga mat.

Yoga not only helps in improving physical health but is also great for your mental health. Here are 11 such things about yoga that you should keep in mind before practicing yoga the next time.

don’t work too hard

Even if you are doing some simple asanas, don’t overwork yourself. On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is easiest, not every asana you do has to be a 10. Some may be 8, 7 or even less. Also, it depends on your body and daily routine.

Season

Don’t do yoga in extreme weather conditions, such as when it’s too hot, too cold, or too humid.

take care of your breath

Breathing plays an important role in yoga practice. One should not hold one’s breath unnaturally unless instructed by the trained one. Breathe normally unless instructed to do so.

yoga after meal

Do not do yoga immediately after having a meal. Wait at least 2-3 hours so that the food can settle by the time you start your practice.

say no when tired

Many people consider yoga practice to be mild, which is not true. Yoga sessions can make you sweat like anything. Thus, when you are tired or sick, avoid practicing yoga so as not to overload your body.

take guidance

This is not a rule but a guideline, do not practice yoga alone. It is best to find a partner and practice under someone’s guidance.

Just reading and exercising can lead to muscle strain or discomfort. If you are doing advanced poses for the first time, it is best to enlist the help of someone.

don’t wear tight clothes

Say no to shoes and tight clothes while doing yoga. Tight upper back clothing can restrict movement of the rib cage and lungs resulting in incomplete breathing.

shower

Taking a shower after a sweaty workout is a must. But do not shower immediately and allow the body to dry normally before going to the shower room.

menstrual yoga

Do not do the ‘leg up’ (upside down) pose during menstruation. Do simple relaxation and breathing postures while you are on your period.

after yoga workout

It is suggested not to do any high-intensity workouts after a yoga session. If you are planning then do it before the yoga session.

Water

Do not drink too much water in between yoga practice. You can also drink a few sips in between to quench your thirst. Having too much water can make you feel heavy and hinder your exercise.
