Police will launch a campaign using Cyber Didi as a mascot to warn about the types of cyber crimes and how they can be committed. Mainly elders and students will be made aware.
A police officer said, ‘Cybercrime is increasing at present. Every day people of different age groups are being cheated of lakhs of rupees. Since there is a need to warn against such scams, we have introduced this mascot to raise awareness. Cyber Didi is portrayed as a teacher. Along with answering all the questions related to cybercrime, people will also be made aware through that mascot. In most cases, fraudsters click on unknown links and grab money. Apart from this, in many cases foreign ‘friends’ cheat in the name of giving gifts on social media. These range from warning people not to download various unknown loan apps or not to receive video calls from unknown numbers. The mascot will explain why such actions can be harmful.
Messages of Cyber Didi have also been shared on the social media page of Bidhannagar Police, where questions are being asked and answered by Cyber Didi. One of the questions is ‘I won a car in a lucky draw. But they are demanding GST and other taxes for delivery. What should I do?’, in addition to, ‘I got an alert about power cut for outstanding bill. What should I do?’ Such a question.
In response, Cyber Didi says, ‘Check it thoroughly, it can be a financial fraud trap. Don’t fall prey to temptation.’ Or ‘Contact your nearest electricity office. This could be a cheat trap. Do not panic, check the notification. According to the police, the main idea behind creating the mascot is to protect citizens from cyber frauds.
