Bill passed in the assembly. All schools including CBSE will now have to teach Gujarati language till class 1-8.

Schools affiliated to any educational board in the state and teaching in any medium will have to compulsorily teach Gujarati as a subject from classes 1 to 8. In this matter, the Gujarat Compulsory Gujarati Language Education and Study Bill-2023 was unanimously passed in the Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday.

Students from outside Gujarat can get exemption from this
The school may grant exemption to students who are residents of outside Gujarat and are studying in a school in Gujarat on the written request of the parents. Schools other than the exempted schools will be fined Rs 50,000 for the first violation, Rs 1 lakh for the second violation and Rs 2 lakh for the third violation. If a school violates for more than one year, its recognition will be cancelled.

Congress leaders criticized
However, Congress leaders including Amit Chavda, Arjun Modhwadia, Shailesh Parmar criticized the government for taking late steps on the Gujarati issue. Amit Chavda said that on April 13, 2018, the Gujarat government had issued a circular to all schools to teach Gujarati subjects, yet schools did not teach Gujarati subjects. On the other hand, the government was not implementing it strictly. So, finally a petition was filed in the High Court and the government had to bring a bill to make Gujarati language compulsory.
