Hemodialysis: Do you know there is a difference between peritoneal-dialysis and hemodialysis and which one is better for your kidneys? How does kidney work to keep the body healthy and when does any patient need dialysis? To answer all these questions, Dr. Rubina Vohra, Nephrology and Transplant Physician of Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Indore is with us today.

Dr. Rubina Vohra explains that The increasing amount of creatinine and urea in the blood is an indication that you have kidney disease. If the kidney does not get the right treatment at the right time, then a day may come when the balance of fluids in your body will deteriorate and the waste materials present in the body will not be able to be eliminated. In such a situation, you may also need kidney dialysis to keep yourself healthy.

this is the work of kidney
According to Dr. Rubina Vohra, the work of the kidney is not limited to balancing the fluids present in the body and excreting waste products through urine, but it also removes minerals like sodium, calcium, phosphorus and potassium as well as water in the blood. And also works to balance the amount of salt. This balance of minerals, salt and water helps the nerves, muscles and tissues of our body to function normally.

In addition, your kidney controls the production of red blood cells in the blood. Kidney also produces vitamins to keep bones healthy and hormones to keep blood pressure normal. The kidney, which works so much together, gradually stops working after being hit by the disease, which is detected with the increase of substances like creatinine and urea. In such a situation, only the option of dialysis remains after the patient to stay healthy.

how kidney works
There are more than one lakh filtering units named nephron in our kidney. Each nephron has a tubule and a filter. The filter is called the glomerulus. Glomerulus filters the blood. Tubules separate essential minerals, nutrients and wastes from the blood. Minerals and nutrients go back to the body through the veins present in the tubules. At the same time, acid, waste material and excess fluid are excreted from the body in the form of urine.

After coming under the grip of the disease, the glomerulus and tubules present in the nephron of the kidney start to stop their work gradually. As a result of which the urine of the patient becomes less. Swelling starts in his face, ankles and feet. There is difficulty in breathing and he starts feeling nauseous. Apart from this, patients also feel very tired after kidney disease. When the body’s GFR (glomerular filtration rate) falls below 15 ml, the work of the glomerulus and tubules is accomplished through dialysis.

what is hemodialysis
Dr. Rubina Vohra explains that in normal dialysis, only the process of diffusion is completed, through which the waste present in the blood is separated. In normal dialysis, only diffusion makes life different. In the process of hemodialysis, more ultrapure water is added to the blood and it is extracted from the filter with more pressure. Filters are also different in hemodialysis, which we call high flux filters.

The advantage of hemodialysis is that it has more clearance of small molecules, which is also called convective clearance. Through hemodialysis, all types of wastes, small and large, can be separated from the blood. Along with this, such patients, who have been undergoing dialysis for five-six years, not only have fewer complications, but bone disease can be avoided by improving their control over blood pressure.
